BARPETA, April 25 - In an effort to help the medical education sector and for the study of human body, the members of a family in Barpeta district donated the corpse of their mother to the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMC) here.

According to information, Lakshi Devi, a progressive lady of Pathshala in Barpeta district, breathed her last on Tuesday at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. She left behind her will written on April 17, 2017 expressing her desire to donate her body to the medical college for study and research.

Accordingly, her body was brought to the FAAMC here on Wednesday and handed over to the college authorities.

A function was organised in the medical college campus on the occasion, where the womans eldest son, daughter-in-law and two daughters were also present. They said their mother was motivated by the campaign against superstition launched by the Ellora Vigyan Manch and she dedicated herself to root out social evils in Bajali area of the district.

Though she lived a very simple life, she was serious about prevalent superstitious beliefs among the people and tried her best to make people aware about scientific and reasonable thinking. She was also associated with a number of social organisations and institutions in Bajali area.

Receiving the body, Dr Jayashree Devi, head of Anatomy at FAAMC, said donation of bodies was very much essential for development of medical science. Corpses are not available as per the need of students for detailed study and research. She expressed hope that the benevolent act of deceased Lakshi Devi and her family will inspire others to follow, which will definitely boost the study of medical science.

Dr Devi offered a wreath on the body just before the function. The gathering observed a minutes silence praying for peace to the departed soul. Several members of the CPI(M) and students of the medical college also attended the function.
