Faleiro to quell rebellion in Meghalaya Cong

SHILLONG, Sept 1 The Congress High Command has deputed its senior party functionary, Luizinho Faleiro to visit Meghalaya, later this week, to cement the party, which is beset by factionalism.

Faleiros visit to the State has been tentatively fixed on Friday and it is being said that he would be trying to bring together two groups within the State party, one for the incumbent Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and the other against him.

Faleiro was scheduled to visit the State on August 11, but he deferred his visit. In the State capital, Faleiro will be attending a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), which has not been held for a long time. He would also be meeting legislators from both groups separately and try to bring peace.

Senior Congress leaders are saying that deputing a senior All India Congress Committee functionary to the State is much overdue as none has come to the State after the Lok Sabha elections. Although Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president DD Lapang, as well as State Planning Board chairman and former Chief Minister Salseng Marak, have met the Congress president Sonia Gandhi recently, demanding removal of the CM, many felt the CLP meeting would be crucial.

Several other senior Congress leaders such as Transport Minister HDR Lyngdoh and Forest and Environment Minister Prestone Tynsong are also demanding Sangmas removal.

On the other hand, the pro-Sangma group are exuding confidence that they have the numbers and the dissidence would be quelled once the CLP is held and the majority is proved. Congress has 29 legislators in the 60-member Assembly and some Independents are also extending support to the Congress-led Government.
