Fake gold trade

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 24 - In yet another incident of the notorious fake gold trade of Lakhimpur district, one person was arrested by police while he was trying to dupe a buyer coming from Tripura.

One Khokan Mazumdar from Tripura was lured by 35-year-old Zahirul Ali, a resident of Number-2 Sonapur village of Bangalmara under Bihpuria Police Station, early this month to buy gold in cheaper rates. Khokan arrived in North Lakhimpur to verify the samples of gold bars shown by Zahirul.

After getting convinced about the quality of the gold, Khokan Mazumdar returned to North Lakhimpur on December 19 along with his son Mithun Mazumdar to buy gold. The father-son duo was asked to visit a spot at Harmutty, 30 km west of North Lakhimpur, by Zahirul where the later received Rs 2 lakh as payment for the gold.

Zahirul then took them in a car to catch a bus. However, Khokan was allegedly thrown out of the car on NH-15 at Parbatpur of Harmutty by Zahirul and his accomplices. The scuffle and screams made by Mithun Mazumdar over the incident attracted the attention of some passersby who got hold of Zahirul. However, his other aides managed to escape with the car.
