GOALPARA, June 15 - What may seem to be the tip of an iceberg of a multi-crore rupee scam in the Department of Health, several cases of appointments made fraudulently in regard to Grade-IV staff have been detected in several districts by the scrutiny committee constituted by the Department of Health, Assam.

According to reliable sources, 81 cases of such fake appointments have been detected in regard to Grade-IV staff in the Department of Health, Goalpara alone.

During the course of preliminary verification, it came to the fore that fake appointment letters were issued since 2005 onwards. Sources said that more such cases are likely to be detected if enquiry is conducted into Grade-III staff appointment too.

Further, these employees were drawing regular salaries from the State Health Department even though they were without work, and all of them claiming to be serving under the Joint Director of Health Services, Goalpara.

According to information available, letters were issued by the Director of Health, Assam to all the joint directors of health of various districts to take appropriate action where such anomalies or fake appointments were detected, while a similar letter No. HSE/Verification/Gr-IV/80/Pt-I/2017/4481/dated 6/2019 in reference to Govt letter No. HLA 1007/2016/18 dated 27/03/2017 and HLA 1007/2016/521 dated 5/11/2018 were also issued to the Joint Director of Health Services, Goalpara with instruction to issue showcause notices to persons whose names were found in the list of Grade-IV staff whose appointments have been found to be fake by the scrutiny committee within one week and then to take appropriate action by issuing formal orders for removal of the said Grade-IV staff after obtaining their replies within seven days.

Reliable sources also informed that a proper enquiry will only reveal the nexus of all the officials of the Health Department for misusing and abusing their official positions, thereby inflicting considerable loss to the state exchequer.
