Fair weather likely during Diwali

By AJIT PATOWARY

GUWAHATI, Oct 26 - The ongoing rainfall activities over the NE region are expected to decrease during the next few days and fair weather, with a shining sky, is expected over the Brahmaputra Valley in Assam and the neighbouring State of Arunachal Pradesh during Diwali, the festival of lights.

Sources at the Guwahati-based Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) said that though rainfall activities are expected to continue over the Barak Valley in Assam, the Brahmaputra Valley is likely to experience fair weather conditions during the Diwali festival.

Due to the presence of a cyclonic circulation over interior Odisha and its neighbourhood up to a height of 2.1 km above the mean sea level (ASL) till Friday and a trough extending from that system to central Assam across the Gangetic West Bengal, rainfall occurred over the entire NE region on Friday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall activities at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya, with extremely heavy rainfall activities at isolated places over Meghalaya, occurred during the past 24 hours under the impact of these two meteorological phenomena.

These phenomena also resulted in widespread rainfall activities over Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura Meteorological (Met) subdivisions and the rest of Assam-Meghalaya Met subdivision during the past 24 hours.

On Saturday, due to the presence of a cyclonic circulation over West Assam and its neighbourhood up to a height of 2.1 km ASL and a trough running from North Odisha to West Assam and a cyclonic circulation across the Gangetic West Bengal, up to a height of 0.9 km ASL, led to widespread rainfall activities over the NE region.

But the system is expected to weaken on Sunday, leading to decreased rainfall activities over Assam-Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. These two Met subdivisions are expected to get scattered rainfall activities, while rainfall activities are expected to continue at many places over Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura Met subdivision even during the next 24 hours. A further decrease in the rainfall activities over the region is expected on Monday, said the RMC sources.
