Facebook, Twitter fall in line

By R Dutta choudhury

GUWAHATI, Aug 29 The spreading of hate messages through internet, most of which originated in Pakistan, came down drastically after the Government of India launched a massive crackdown against it.

Highly placed sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) told The Assam Tribune that the Government has already blocked 309 sites, which were used for spreading hate messages , mostly by elements in Pakistan. Sources revealed that the social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter cooperated with the Government of India and there is no plan to block those sites.

Sources said that the Facebook and Twitter already provided some vital information sought by the Government of India on the origins of the hate messages and now it is clear that most of those originated in Pakistan. Of course, the sites are yet to provide all the details sought by the Government of India and we hope to get more details after the legal formalities are completed. But the fact remains that these sites have started cooperating with the Government, which is a positive development, MHA sources added.

It may be mentioned here that the hate messages spread through internet created trouble in different parts of the country and this was one of the main reasons for the recent exodus of thousands of people from the North East region from different parts of India including Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, sources said that a committee of officers of different ministries of the Government of India, which recently visited a number of relief camps in lower Assam districts, gave a report expressing its satisfaction over the facilities provided to the inmates. However, on the rehabilitation of the camp inmates, sources said that there have been conflicting demands by various organizations on the issue of rehabilitation and those would have to be looked into.

Sources said that the rehabilitation plan would have to be formulated by the State Government and the Centre would only provide financial and other support for the same. Sources also said that adequate forces have been deployed in the state as per the requirements given by the State Government. It is now up to the State to make best use of the forces to bring the situation under control and the Centre would extend all possible help under the circumstances.
