By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 8 Even as the level of insurgent activities has gone down considerably in the State, businessmen in the State continue to face the menace of extortion drive carried out by various groups including the ULFA and the NDFB.

Of late, Assam Police has come across several incidents of businessmen been served extortion notices in Guwahati itself.

A senior official of the Assam Police confirmed that cadres of militant groups like ULFA and NDFB continue to carry out the drive across the State, including the capital city.

We have received some information about such extortion drive being carried out but in most of the instances, the complainants are reluctant to lodge a formal complaint. We are however, tracking the movements of the militants on the prowl, the official stated.

It has been reliably learnt that a couple of city-based businessmen, who had been served extortion notice recently, have downed their shutters and left the city fearing threat from the militant groups.

However, police could not confirm any such recent incidents, stating, Until and unless a formal complaint is lodged with us, it becomes very difficult for us to intervene and take necessary action.
