By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 25 - Not restricting celebration of Earth Day to only the designated date (April 22), the North East Diocesan Social Service Society (NEDSSS) in collaboration with Earth Day Network India, has decided to observe the day tomorrow also at two schools of Kharghuli area of the city.

Community leaders and a number of NGOs are scheduled to take part in tomorrows programmes, which will be followed by a cleanliness drive along the Kharghuli roadside.

Earlier on April 22, the two organisations jointly observed Earth Day at a number of locations across the State, including Guwahati.

Altogether 400 students took part in the programme spreading the message of protecting Nature and wildlife and judicious use of natural resources.

Speaking during the Earth Day programme organised at Joypur, Kharghuli, Father Varghese, Director of NEDSSS said global warming and rapid destruction of green cover and wildlife are directly linked to human activities. Hence, society must make efforts to contribute its bit for protecting the earth and its green cover.

There are steps that can be taken in our everyday life that would go a long way in protecting environment such as reducing waste, switching off the light when not in use, planting saplings, proper use of water, carrying reusable shopping bags and controlling the use of plastic. Even proper waste disposal is a collective responsibility of society. It is necessary to ensure a safe future for us, he said.

He further said that every living being plays a unique role in the complex web of life. Thus, society must come forward to protect the endangered species.

More than 700 saplings, provided by the State forest department were planted and distributed among the people. We will ensure that the saplings are planted and proper care is taken so that they grow well, Savio Rangla, consultant of Earth Day Network India said.

Similar awareness programmes were conducted in Tezpur, Bokajan, Goroimari and several other places.
