Expert to study floods caused by Ranganadi

GUWAHATI, Sept 20 - A meeting to discuss issues on the devastating flood that had occurred recently in Lakhimpur district due to release of surplus water from the Ranganadi hydroelectric project was held here today under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia.

The meeting discussed the problems with the NEEPCO authority, representative of the central and district committees of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and experts from IIT Guwahati.

The meeting decided to give responsibility to Prof Arup Kumar Sarma of IIT Guwahati to do an indepth study of the floods caused by Ranganadi project and submit a detailed report to the State government in consultation with the representatives of the AJYCP and NEEPCO authorities within one month.

The State government will send the report to the Union Ministry of Power. The meeting further decided to convene the next meeting in an appropriate time wherein the Power Ministry will be requested to send their representative so that a positive decision can be taken on the matter.

The Chief Secretary requested the representatives of the NEEPCO to find out ways to avoid the devastating situation arising out of the Ranganadi project. He also requested them to ensure the presence of the NEEPCO Chairman in the next meeting.

Realising the damage caused due to release of excess water from the Ranganadi project, the Chief Secretary further asked the Lakhimpur deputy commissioner to prepare and submit a proposal to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
