GUWAHATI, March 1 An exhibition on topographical mapping was organised by Assam and Nagaland GDC, Survey of India, on February 28 on its office premises at Ganeshguri Chariali as a part of the National Science Day celebration. The exhibition was inaugurated by Major General C Chatterjee, additional surveyor general, Survey of India. The theme for this year was, Genetically modified crops and food security-issues and prosperity.

Modern surveying instruments like GPS, total stations, digital levels etc as well as conventional surveying instruments were displayed in the exhibition and were demonstrated to the visitors, specially the student community.

A show on The great arc measurement of 78 meridian which had been started by the mathematician and geophysicist Lambton and completed by Sir George Everest in the 19th century was also part of the exhibition.

Map sales counter was also in the exhibition and the visitors purchased maps and digital Atlases. It is pertinent to mention here that Survey of India is the sole national agency for map making in India.
