Exhibition of articles of zamindar family of Lakhipur Mechpara

DHUBRI, Nov 14 - In a bid to promote the rich heritage of the Lakhipur Mechpara zamindar family, an exhibition titled �Art and Spectacle: Life in the Estate� will be organised by the Directorate of Museums, Government of Assam, at the Assam State Museum in Guwahati from November 17 to December 2.

The exhibition will showcase 51 objects belonging to the family and have been curated by Dhubri District Museum Officer Mrinmoy Das. The items include a rare ceremonial sword, ceremonial stick, leopard head-shaped hand rest, elephant tusk, hunting rifle, gaumukha kamandala and a ramdao.

Lata Devi, a fourth-generation member of the Dhubri Mechpara zamindar family donated around 200 objects to the District Museum, Dhubri for preservation and display.

�Famed for its flamboyance, regal household materials and a bloodline spread across generations, the Dhubri Lakhipur Mechpara zamindar family is one of Assam�s most prominent families,� said Das.

He said the exhibition will unfold the social and cultural life of the zamindar estate, the relationship between landlord and peasant, and rituals. It aims to reveal the extraordinary culture of the zamindars, showcasing different aspects of their lives.
