Exchange of seats likely among NDA partners in Assembly polls

By PRANJAL BHUYAN

GUWAHATI, Oct 15 - Exchange of some constituencies among the constituents of the ruling NDA may take place in the 2021 Assam Assembly elections.

Alliance politics means making sacrifices and adopting the policy of give and take. There is no dogmatism in alliance politics. So, exchange of seats among the constituents of our alliance may take place in the Assembly polls, BJP national general secretary Dilip Saikia told The Assam Tribune on Thursday.

Asked if the BJP may stake claim to some seats where its partner AGP has sitting MLAs, Saikia said, So far, we have not formally discussed such issues. But, sacrifices are unavoidable in alliances.

There have been reports that the BJP may stake claim to some constituencies which were won by the AGP in the 2016 elections.

Saikia said some changes may take place in Assams political scenario post the elections to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), but refrained from further elaboration.

The BTR polls, which had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, may take place in December.

Saikia said the BJP is confident of forming the next administration in the BTR.

We generally contest local elections, like those of the BTR, on our own. We had contested the last panchayat polls as well as the elections to various autonomous councils and local bodies on our own. Similarly, we are fighting the BTR polls without any alliance, because that was the demand of our party cadres from the region as well as the people of Bodoland. We are confident that the next government in BTR will be formed under the leadership of the BJP, he said.

Asked if the BJP may snap ties with the BPF in the run-up to the 2021 elections, Saikia said, Our alliance with the BPF remains intact at the State level. Besides, the State unit on its own has no authority to take a decision regarding alliances for the Assembly polls. Our partys central committee makes such decisions.
