Ex-Sabha chiefs, others call for end to controversies

GUWAHATI, Jan 4 - Voicing concern at the anomalies in the Asam Sahitya Sabha, its former functionaries have appealed for immediate end to all controversies that are plaguing the apex literary body of the state at present.

Former presidents of the literary body Lakshmi Nandan Bora and Kanaksen Deka, and former central organiser Bhabani Prasad Adhikary while calling for reformation to retain the importance of the organisation on the society expressed their displeasure over some officials of the Sabha indulging in acts contrary to its constitution.

A statement signed by the former functionaries also demanded complete transparency and accountability in the functioning of the Sabha, especially vis-�-vis financial aids received from various organisations.

�The centenary celebration of the Sabha is also due this year and we just hope that the faith shown by the people of Assam for the literary body over the years remains intact,� the statement added.

Sivasagar correspondent adds: In a significant move today the reception committee of the 74 biennial session of the Asam Sahitya Sabha held on to its earlier resolution taken on December 14 to boycott the principal secretary Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi in the wake of controversies, adding to the mounting pressure on him to quit the organisation . The emergent executive meeting held in Sivasagar Juva Dol auditorium and presided over by Sonaram Boruah , president of the Reception Committee, almost all the speakers criticised the principal secretary and the central committee�s indifferent attitude to public opinion .The speakers said that the principal secretary in a way threatened the people of Sivasagar by saying that there are other committees ready to hold the meeting. The meeting refuted central committee�s appeal to reconsider the earlier decision and reiterated their stand to hold the meeting ad scheduled but without Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi.
