Ex-MP Nepal Ch Das dead

HAILAKANDI, Jan 24 - Former MP of Karimganj, MLA of Algapur and Katigorah and minister, Nepal Chandra Das died on January 23 morning at his residence in Panchgram of Hailakandi district. He was 74 and left behind two sons and four daughters and many relatives. He was suffering from diabetes from the last many years and had also suffered a massive brain stroke recently. His body was cremated at Thandapur crematorium here in the afternoon.

Late Das was the Panchayat and Fisheries minister for a very short term in the Anwara Taimur Ministry in the State. He was twice elected to the Assam Assembly� first in 1978 from Algapur constituency of Hailakandi district and then in 1983 from Katigorah of Cachar district. A dedicated Congress worker, Late Das was also elected twice to the Lok Sabha from the Karimganj (SC) constituency.

Former minister Gautam Roy, Hailakandi district Congress committee president and former MLA, Rahul Roy, former MP Lalit Mohan Suklabaidya and also Congress leaders from the different parts of the valley, who were present at the cremation, have mourned his death. The president and vice-president of Asom Anusuchito Jati Parishad, Surya Kanta Sinha and Kulendra Das also attended the last rites of Late Das and said that he was a key person for the development of Scheduled Caste and backward community of the valley.
