Ex-MP Drupad Borgohain passes away in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH, April 10 - Drupad Borgohain, the veteran left wing leader who once was a Rajya Sabha MP and once an MLA from Nazira passed away at around 6 am today following prolonged illness at a private nursing home here. He was 77.

The veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI) was suffering from kidney problems. He was admitted to a private nursing home here last evening. He was earlier undergoing treatment at Sivasagar. His body was carried to his native place in Maduri village in Sivasagar district for the funeral by his family members, sympathisers and several CPI leaders including Kanak Gogoi, the CPI candidate for Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency. Borgohain leaves behind his wife Amiya Gogoi and a host of relatives.

Born on November 7, 1941 to Manic Chandra Borgohain and Rupeswari Borgohain in Maduri village, Borgohain had joined CPI during his college stint in 1963. He did his schooling in Nazira High School. He graduated with BA (Honours) from Sivasagar College. He was the president of the state council of the All India Kisan Sabha as also state unit of the All India Youth Federation. He held the post of secretary of the State�s CPI for two terms besides being one of the national executive members of the party.

Borgohain sacrificed his teaching profession to become a full-time politician in 1982 so as to contest elections. In 1983, he contested as CPI candidate from Nazira LAC but was unsuccessful. He was a Rajya Sabha MP from 1998 to 2004. He won the Nazira LA seat in 2006 when he defeated Hemoprova Saikia of the Congress. He had also contested as Lok Sabha candidate from Jorhat HPC on three occasions. �Borgohain was a very simple and dedicated leader who led by example. He played great role in building the CPI in the State. His death is truly a great loss to the party,� Kanak Gogoi, the CPI candidate for Jorhat Lok Sabha told The Assam Tribune.
