BARPETA, Nov 28 - Liakat Ali Khan, ex-MLA of Chenga constituency who passed away on September 25 last was remembered at Bahari in Barpeta district recently. A public meeting held on the occasion was chaired by Forhad Bhuyan, president of the Liakat Ali Khan Memorial Committee.

Addressing the meeting, veteran politician and former Chief Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman said that Liakat was a leader who was not confined to any particular community. He asserted that Khan was really a man of the people and worked wholeheartedly for their development and welfare.

Referring to the perennial problem of erosion by Brahmaputra, Barman said that Liakat Ali Khan fought for the solution of this problem during his life and raised the issue on the floor of the House several times. He lamented that the limited schemes implemented in this area to check erosion did not fructify due to the lack of will of a section of the bureaucrats.

Speaking on the occasion, Gunindranath Das, MLA of Barpeta said that Liakat was economically poor but was a rich man mentally and morally, who was never lured by the lust of money.

Abu Sufian, DIG of Assam Police and a writer who formally released the book published by the celebration committee titled Jananeta Liakat Ali Khan: Ek Sangrami Jivan Parikrama said that leaders like Liakat are not made but born. Sufian said that late Khan acquired all the qualities of a leader and was candid in nature.

Ganesh Talukdar, a lifelong friend of Khan reminded him of his valour during the turbulent period of Assam Agitation. Naba Kumar Das, secretary of the Barpeta district committee of Bharatiya Janata Party, who was an office-bearer of the district committee earlier spoke of his association with Khan and termed him as a true leader of the masses. He also narrated the incident of Khan being humiliated by the former Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.

Rabiul Hussain, vice-president of AGP Barpeta district committee, Muktar Hussain Khan, ex- MLA, Anil Kumar Das, Vice Chairman of Assam Financial Corporation, Jitu Talukdar, Vice Chairman of AIDC, Mojammil Hussain, ex-principal of Navajyoti College, Kalgachia and Sukur Ali Ahmed, ex-Minister and incumbent MLA of Chenga also addressed the gathering.
