Ex-MLA gets bail in POCSO case

SHILLONG, Nov 26 - The Meghalaya High Court today granted bail to former MLA Julius Kitbok Dorphang who is an accused in a POCSO case.

The ex-legislator had petitioned for bail on medical grounds. �Julius Dorphang was granted bail by the High Court today,� Dorphang�s advocate, KC Gautam, said.

Earlier, the High Court sought a medical report during the hearing on the bail plea on November 18. Subsequently, the report was placed before the Court on November 24.

A single-judge bench of Justice W Diengdoh granted bail to Dorphang during the verdict on the bail plea today.

Dorphang, a former HNLC militant, entered active politics and won the Mawhati seat in Ri-Bhoi district. He was booked under the POCSO Act in 2017 after being accused of sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl.

After the alleged assault, Dorphang had absconded for 11 days before his arrest at Guwahati. FIRs were filed against him by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and subsequently, he was sent to jail.
