Ex MLA arrested on sexual abuse charge

AGARTALA, Jan 9 - A day after a stormy session in the Tripura Assembly, Manoranjan Acharjee, who was forced to quit as a MLA for his alleged involvement in a sexual abuse case, was arrested by police on Saturday.

Soon after the arrest, the former CPM MLA was produced before a court seeking police remand for interrogation. However, a local court in Amarpur subdivision of Gomati district sent him to judicial remand till January 12.

The alleged sexual abuse incident occurred in the CPM party office at Amarpur on November 27 last year. He was expelled from the party as well as member of Assembly on December 10 based on party�s internal investigation.

An FIR was lodged against the expelled MLA under 354 (B) IPC and 8 & 9 sections of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO Act).

The police had asked the accused to appear before the Investigating Officer (IO) for interrogation. On Saturday, the former MLA went to meet the Sub Divisional Police Officer when he was arrested.

Earlier, the Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes when the opposition demanded arrest of Acharjee for his alleged involvement in the sexual abuse case on Friday.
