Ex-Jorhat MLA flays admin for neglecting storm victims

By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, Oct 28 - AICC secretary and former Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami today flayed the Jorhat district administration and public representatives Jorhat MLA and Jorhat Lok Sabha MP for neglecting the victims of the huge storm that hit the town and several adjoining areas on October 21 last, leaving behind a trail of devastation. A youth was also killed in the lightning that accompanied the storm.

It may mentioned here that the storm uprooted a large number of trees, electricity supply posts, severely damaged houses with many roofs blown away, snapping power supply forcing a large number of people to take shelter in makeshift structures.

Goswami came down heavily on the administration for failing to respond to the post-storm situation to restore normalcy. Alleging that the response of the administration to provide succour to the victims was nil and work for restoration of electricity was very slow for which it took five days to resume the supply thus paralysing normal life.

He said that people were left high and dry with no water and no electricity. No relief was provided also to residents whose houses were damaged.

Goswami, who arrived in Jorhat on Sunday and has been visiting the storm-hit areas alleged only a handful of people have been provided relief items.

The former legislator said that after seeing people suffering by the storm he (Rana Goswami) along with Congress party members arranged food items and warm clothes for them and till date has distributed to about 140 families. He said he will be again tomorrow distributing relief items.
