Ex-HNLC ultras admit interest in coal business

SHILLONG, Jan 24 � A group of surrendered Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (SHNLC) led by its former chairman Julius Dorphang has admitted that they had business interest in the coal-rich belts of Nongklieh in Jaintia Hills but refuted allegations that they indulged in threats and intimidation to take away the land.

The latest allegations was regarding the alleged threat and intimidation by the SHNLC in the last week of December where a large stretch of land in Briwar area was specifically mentioned.

Reacting to the report, the former chairman of the HNLC paraded his former comrades before newsmen here recently, besides displaying the legal papers pertaining to the acquisition of 30 acres of land.

The legal papers displayed and distributed to newsmen indicated that two SHNLC cadres Itjanai Soanes and Roning Dohling have procured the land from Liangas Dkhar at Rs 30 lakh on May 30, last year.

The two SHNLC cadres who claimed to have acquired the land legally said, �Never have we resorted to threat to acquire the land or in trying to resolve trivial issues in resolving boundaries�.
