By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, March 19 - Amid protests by the opposition, former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha here this morning. Dressed in a simple jacket and trousers, the former CJI took oath in English even as the Congress, Trinamool Congress and Left MPs raising slogans staged a walkout.

Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu presided over the proceedings when Gogoi took oath.

Earlier, ex-CJI Gogoi, accompanied by his wife Rupanjali Gogoi, daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, met Naidu in his chamber. The ex-CJI attended the House for about two hours.

President Ram Nath Kovind on March 16 nominated the former CJI to the Rajya Sabha as a member against the vacancy created due to the expiry of the term of KTS Tulsi, a nominated member.

Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from October 3, 2018 to November 17, 2019. On November 9, 2019, a five-judge bench headed by him had delivered the verdict in the long-pending Ramjanmabhoomi case.
