Ex-BJP MLA joins AGP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 10 The AGP, which claims it has done a lot of introspection to regain its mass support, has welcomed former BJP MLA Abhijit Hazarika to the party. Hazarika is one of the four BJP MLAs who had defied the party whip and cast their votes in favour of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha election. The four MLAs had allegedly supported the Congress for monetary gains.

Hazarika, who had represented the Rangapara constituency, was extended a rousing welcome by the AGP leaders, including party president Atul Bora, at a formal joining ceremony. Bora said that the party is looking towards improving its performance in the coming Assembly elections and that new people, who have faith in regionalism, would be inducted into the party.

National parties will never give importance to the issues of Assam. The problems of the State can be solved only by a regional party, said Bora. Slamming the BJP and the Congress, Bora said that these national parties are least bothered to resolve the vexed foreigners issue of the State as both are doing vote bank politics.

Bora also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not raising the issue of a repatriation treaty with Bangladesh to address the infiltration problem of Assam.
