Eviction-drive in Jorhat town from today

By CORRESPONDENT

JORHAT, July 7 In order to solve the problems of flash-flood and water-logging in the town Jorhat district administration is going to launch a massive cleaning in its major water channels Tarajan and Tocklai from Tuesday which include eviction too in many encroached areas in the town.

We will clean the two channels. Eviction will also be a part of the programme, said Jorhat deputy commissioner Solanki Vishal Vasant.

The officers concerned of Jorhat east and west circles have already identified many encroached areas in the two rivulets which carry the heavy-rain water from the town to some wetlands located in the western part of the district.

According to the district administration officials the length of Tarajan in the town area is over 1 km while Tocklais length is more than 2 kms in Jorhat town. As encroachers illegally occupied some areas in both the rivulets they lost their actual width in many important areas in the town which witnessed flash-floods even in a heavy rainfall in past four weeks.

The maximum width of Tocklai is 100 feet in certain areas as per the revenue departments map. But you will never see such an area in Tocklai due to large-scale encroachment, said an officer of the district administration.

Though the eviction will be initially started in Tarajan and Tocklai it will be later done on the bank of Bhogdoi river in the town after a detailed survey soon, said the officer.
