Eviction drive at Kalaigaon

By Correspondent

KALAIGAON, Dec 8 - The Udalguri district administration today conducted an eviction drive at Rupatal village in accordance with an order from the BTC. The Revenue Circle Officer of Kalaigaon carried out the drive, clearing several bighas of land along the Noa river.

The Noa changed its course at Rupatal a few years ago, causing flood in several villages. It had become necessary to divert the river. But due to illegal encroachment, works to this effect could not get under way. The BTC authorities issued eviction notices to illegal occupants in May this year. But the encroachers ignored the notices. So the eviction drive was conducted by the Kalaigaon Revenue Circle Officer seven months after the issue of the notices, in the presence of police and CRPF personnel and officials of the Soil Conservation department.

Meanwhile, the people of Kalaigaon have urged the BTC authorities to remove encroachment on the MB Road in Kalaigaon town. Shopkeepers have been illegally occupying all the footpaths, causing a great deal of inconvenience to the pedestrians.
