Erratic water supply hits city locality

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 16 Irked at the irregular water supply in the recent days, the people of Panbazar area have asked the authorities to make alternative arrangements for supplying water in the greater Panbazar area in view of the advent of summer.

The people faced a severe water crisis recently for three days consecutively due to some technical problem and also due to the drying Brahmaputra. Though the water supply has been restored now, it is still erratic at many places.

One of the oldest localities of the city, Panbazar has been witnessing water crisis for the past many years, despite its proximity to the river Brahmaputra.

Brahmaputra is the main source of water supply in the greater Panbazar area. But, over the years the problem of water crisis is worsening in this locality mainly due to drying up of river Brahmaputra. Arrival of summer would aggravate the problem for the residents, ex-MLA and social activist Ajoy Dutta said.

The barge stationed in the Brahmaputra water is an indicator of the water level. The barge behind the old DC bungalow has gone far away from its usual location, showing a dangerous sign. If alternative arrangements are not made for water supply, the people would face a severe water crisis during this year and coming years as well, added Dutta.
