SUALKUCHI, Sept 1 - The people of Sualkuchi could not watch the major events of the Asian Games womens 400m semifinal on August 26 and the final on August 27 in Jakarta where Hima Das got the silver medal, due to power failure here. They were even deprived of watching the live telecast of the events of 4 400 m mixed relay at the Asian Games on August 28 because of power cuts.
The present power infrastructure in greater Sualkuchi areas has been witnessing frequent and prolonged power cuts since the last few days leaving residents without electricity for several hours every day. The people in Sualkuchi areas particularly the Gaon Panchayat areas of Sualkuchi and Bansar, Gandhmow, Roumari, Dampur, Sobhanchah, Bamundi, Halogaon, Silguri, Lah, Srihati etc., are the worse hit due to erratic power supply and load shedding. The situation is extremely unpleasant during the peak hours at night from 5pm to 9pm and it becomes unbearable to remain inside houses due to the seething heat.
The people alleged that the 35-year-old main lines of Hajo feeder through which power is supplied to Sualkuchi by way of Amingaon from Shishugram, North Guwahati, the grids (electricity distribution network) are the main cause of frequent breakdown of power supply. Surajit Kalita, Sub Divisional Engineer, Sualkuchi told this correspondent that some poles erected between North Guwahati and Amingaon are in swampy areas and it is difficult to detect the faults online. Moreover, sometimes the jumper gets burnt due to overloading or some other case but the repairing of the broken jumper takes two to three hours as the location of the poles is in marshy land.
The people alleged that less initiative for early detection of the fault in the lines between Amingaon and Sualkuchi is the cause of breakdown of power supply. The Amingaon control room cuts the power supply till the clearance of the fault is not communicated. Sometimes, the burning of gang switch in the 11KV feeder causes the disruption of power supply of the locality under that particular feeder. Again the loadshedding due to shortage of power-supply in the grid at Shishugram, North Guwahati is a regular feature for two to three hours in Sualkuchi areas.
Sometimes low voltage adds to the suffering of the residents during the peak hours at night. The power grid at Shishugram, North Guwahati supplies 2 -3 mega watt of power to Sualkuchi in the peak hours at nights. But the sub-divisional engineer denies it and told this correspondent that the grid supplies 17mega watt power to Sualkuchi, Hajo, Emami India and the Law University and 5 mega watt is reserved for Sualkuchi. The power is distributed in four feeders namely Sualkuchi, Bamundi, Water supply and Bansar feeder, he said.
