NORTH LAKHIMPUR, May 8 - Continuous and unabated erosion by the Brahmaputra in Lakhimpur�s Dhakuakhana subdivision has threatened the safety of the Sisi-Tekeliphuta embankment as rain has been lashing this region presently. Considered as the protection cover for Dhakuakhana area, the Sisi-Tekeliphuta embankment is in great danger as the mighty river is eroding the banks in places like Baghchuk, Modarguri and Bandena under Maatmora Gaon Panchayat of the subdivision. Paddy fields with standing ahu rice and cattle farms have been swept away by the erosion of the Brahmaputra in the last five days. The villagers here are of the apprehension that if the erosion continues for some more days the main course of the river may enter the stream that has been flowing off the embankment.
Incessant rain also has swept away the apron and some geo-bags of Sisi-Tekeliphuta embankment from the Bandena area. It may be mentioned that the Union Government spent Rs 155 crore under Flood Management Scheme for the strengthening of Sisi-Tekeliphuta embankment by the State Water Resources department for the protection of Dhakuakhona and Majuli.
Meanwhile, the Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Naba Kumar Doley visited the erosion-affected areas of Baghchuk in Dhakuakhona Lotachuk area of nearby Dhemaji district. He assured the local villagers of taking emergent steps for the protection of the river bank areas.
