Erosion threatening Bhogerpar village

By Correspondent

BARPETA, July 18 - Severe erosion by the mighty Brahmaputra is threatening the existence of Bhogerpar, a village in Barpeta district. After eroding vast agricultural fields, five familes have lost their homes during the last three days and more are facing similar threats within the days to come.

Erosion by the Brahmaputra along the Bahari Baghbar sector has been a regular phenomenon for the last six decades. The Brahmaputra is now fast approaching the north destroying one village after another. Although the intensity of erosion was low for the last few years, it has turned dangerous in the last few days posing threat to the existence of Bhogerpar Bandali and Dokreswar.

The Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta, Ashwani Kumar accompanied by the Executive Engineer of Water Resource Department, Barpeta division, Project Director of DRDA and Executive Engineer, Rural Roads, Barpeta division visited Bhogerpar on Sunday but they had to face the ire of the people.

Aggrieved people of the village held the authorities solely responsible for their plight and questioned the team about the steps undertaken to check the onslaught of flood and erosion. They also alleged large-scale corruption in implementing the few schemes meant for checking erosion.
