Erosion posing threat in Mukalmua area

By Correspondent

NALBARI, April 28 Massive erosion caused by the river Brahmaputra at Kaplabari village near Mukalmua in Nalbari district has posed serious threat to as many as 20 villages of that locality. About 70 per cent of the right side embankment of the river has already been eroded by the river.

The Water Resources Department has been working round the clock to prevent the havoc caused by severe erosion. The sub-divisional officer (SDO) of the department Pratul Patowary informed that a scheme of Rs 3.70 crore has been sanctioned under the Flood Damage Relief (FDR) head to carry out anti-erosion work at Kaplabari. With this fund, the department completed boulder pitching in an area of 300 metres. According to Patowary, the department submitted another project of Rs 1.60 crore to the Nalbari Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri to immediately protect the embankment from the clutches of the severe erosion.

It may be mentioned here that if the river Brahmaputra breached the embankment at Kaplabari then about 50,000 people of Nalbari and Barpeta district will be affected.
