Erosion poses threat to Bokakhat residents

DERGAON, May 28 - Large-scale land erosion is taking place at the northern part of NH-37 in Bokakhat Legislative Assembly Constituency in Golaghat district.

Due to incessant rains during the past few days, the water level of Brahmaputra has risen, causing large-scale erosion.

The embankment on the streamlet Alengmari under Disoi Gaon Panchayat of Uttar Mahura Mouza was breached by floodwaters, submerging cropland in Riri area on Wednesday.

The erosion in areas like Riri, Lohore and Teliyabari under Dishoi Gaon Panchayat of Bokakhat subdivision have forced the residents there to spend sleepless nights.

The sluice gate on Nikari Jaan, a streamlet, was overflowed by the rising water of Gelabeel, posing a threat to areas like Gutung, Baligaon, Nikari, Bamun Chapori, etc.

Bokakhat Agricultural Sub Divisional Officer Ranjit Sarma visited these areas on Thursday. Later, he revealed that about 3,000 bighas of boro paddy field are under floodwaters.
