DIBRUGARH, June 14 � The erosion and flood-hit citizens of the districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia have decided to drag the State government to Court if the former failed to respond with immediate remedial measures.
A general convention held at Natya Mandir in Amollapatty here involving representatives of various non-governmental organisations, youth organisations and students� bodies observed that the government was not showing keen interest in protecting the cash rich twin districts of Assam from the fury of the Brahmaputra. The general assembly in unison resolved to approach the court for protection of their life and properties.
During the general convention, the representatives of various organisations slammed the government for failing to take up immediate concrete schemes for checking further erosion by Brahmaputra. Several leaders speaking on behalf of the flood and erosion affected people said that they needed immediate measures and not just promises. The meeting came to a conclusion that drastic movement on the part of the general public was becoming the need of the hour.
Some of the organisations taking part in the convention included Dibrugarh-Tinsukia Flood and Erosion Resistance Committee, Rohmoria Gorakhohonia Pratirudh Sangram Mancha, Nagaghuli Erosion Resistance Committee, Mohanaghat Erosion Resistance Committee, Dighal Tarrang Erosion Resistance Committee, Naharkatia Erosion Resistance Committee, Hatighuli Erosion Resistance Committee, Sassani Erosion Resistance Committee, Guijan Erosion Resistance Committee, Dholla Erosion Resistance Committee, All Assam Students� Union and All Assam Mottock Yuva Chatra Sanmilan.
The general assembly also criticised the district administration here for celebrating the completion of four years of the present government when the people in the district were under the threat of flood and erosion. �Celebration is meaningless when thousands of people are crying for protection from flood and erosion by the Brahmaputra in the district,� Jugendra Nath Bora, president of the Dibrugarh District Central Erosion Resistance Committee who presided over the convention said.
Noted writer and former president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha Dr Nagen Saikia who also attended the meeting said that government should not overlook short term initiatives in the garb of planning long term measures. Local MLA Prasanta Phukan was of the opinion that the Centre should constitute a high power technical committee to study and suggest measures for the anti erosion measures.
It needs mention here that the Brahmaputra which has already swallowed over 25 revenue villages, destroyed eight tea gardens, rendered thousands homeless along the Brahmaputra stretch from Sadiya in Tinsukia district to Dibrugarh has posed threat to several vital establishments of the district including the township.
