Erosion havoc on at Majuli

By Correspondent

KAMALABARI, Sept 1 Erosion by the Brahmaputra continues unabated at Shalmara, Dakhinpat, Kumargaon, Chumoimari, Bengenati, Bhakat Chapari, Saraati, Moluwal and Dakhin Majuli. On the northern side of Majuli, erosion by the Kherkatiya suti, a stream of the Subansiri has endangered the existence of Jengraimukh, the hub of tribal culture in the upper part of the river island. The hearth and homes of about 70 families have been shifted to safer places in the face of erosion, this year.

If erosion is not contained, Majuli may be bifurcated through the Bhogpur satra or the Bengenaati satra, as the mighty river is eroding a sizeable portion of land near these satras.

Sit-in: The Majuli subdivisional committee of the All Assam Students Union staged a 30-hour sit-in stir at Kamalabari Chariali from August 27 to 28 demanding permanent protection of Majuli from flood and erosion.

Torchlight procession: The Majuli district AJYCP took out a torchlight procession here on August 28 demanding a solution to permanent protection of Majuli from flood and erosion and other burning issues.

Office locked: The Majuli District Youth Congress Committee held a demonstration at the office of the executive engineer, Brahmaputra Board at the Natun Kamalabari satra, here in protest against the failure of the board to protect it up. The window panes were broken by the agitators. The SDO (Civil), Majuli accompanied by police opened the locked office.

Govt flayed: The tithi of Mahapurush Madhavdev was observed on August 29 and it was a Sunday. But the government declared August 30 as the holiday unnecessarily. The conscious people, here have flayed the Assam Government.
