GAURIPUR, Aug 1 - Erosion of the turbulent Gaurang river poses a serious threat to many areas under Lakhiganj Gaon Panchayat in Bilasipara subdivision. The erosion by the river has severely affected villages like Alengmari, Gaurangtari, Udmari, Baukabhangi, Lakhiganj, etc.
The river has already eroded a vast stretches of agricultural land on the river bank. The only crematorium of the locality has been threatened and nearly one bigha of land adjacent to the crematorium has been lost.
Some of the dwelling houses situated near the bank of the river are also likely to be eroded. However, the department concerned have not taken any step to protect the area from erosion.
Local MLA Ashok Kumar Singhi visited the area on Thursday last and assured the people that their land and property would be protected from the erosion by the river with immediate effect. But the villagers lamented that mere assurance would not help them to protect their land and property.
