By CORRESPONDENT

KAMALABARI, Aug 11 Erosion by the river Brahmaputra has assumed alarming proportions at Dakhinpat Kumargaon putting the existence of the village under threat.

The households of Bapukan Kalita, Soni Kalita, Sondhar Kalita, Chandan Kalita, Dilip Kalita, Devram Kalita, Paresh Kalita and Rohit Kalita are facing threats of erosion by the river at a distance of about 10 metres. The Brahmaputra Board is trying to contain erosion by placing bamboo cribs dampeners and porcupines at the vulnerable points of the river bank.

Eco-clubs deprived: Under the guidance of the Society for Environmental Education, North East (SEENE), Golaghat, different eco-clubs were formed in the middle and secondary schools of the districts of Golaghat, Jorhat and Sivasagar eight years ago and they were getting fund from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest through the Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) and the SEENE for environmental works.

During the financial year 2009-10, the SEENE distributed Rs 6,50,000 among 260 schools of Golaghat district. Similarly, the same amount was distributed among the same number of schools in Sivasagar district also. In this way 520 schools got Rs 2500 each from the above mentioned ministry.

But according to an allegation received here from an authentic source, due to the interference of the deputy commissioner, Jorhat 260 schools of Jorhat district have been deprived of getting this fund so far.

The DC, Jorhat took the responsibility of distributing the amount among the schools, debarring the NGO from doing so. But surprisingly, there is now every possibility of the schools losing the funds this year.

The NGO concerned has demanded of the authorities concerned to institute a probe into the matter to ensure proper distribution of funds among the beneficiaries.
