GUWAHATI, April 17 - Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui has said that insurgent groups from the Northeast are not being provided shelter within China and ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah also has no role in his current visit to Assam, according to a statement issued here today.
The Ambassador said this when former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi raised the issue during the former�s visit to Gogoi�s Koinadhora residence here yesterday. Zhaohui was accompanied by his wife, Councillor Dr Jiang Yilli.
Gogoi told Zhaohui that certain reports indicate that shelter is being given to NE insurgent groups within China. In reply, the Chinese envoy said that this is not true.
During the meeting, Gogoi raised a number of issues with the Chinese Ambassador. With regard to the construction of Chinese hydropower projects over the Brahmaputra, the former Chief Minister expressed his concerns over the possible adverse impact on the flow of river water.
To this, the Ambassador replied that the Chinese government continues to share important hydrological information with its Indian counterpart. He, however, assured that he would look into such concerns.
Regarding the Stilwell Road, �the Chinese Ambassador expressed his (sic) willingness to repair the road and improve the connectivity with India via the One Belt One Road project,� said the statement. It added that the envoy went to the extent of saying that the part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor that runs through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir can be reviewed.
�He was open to the idea of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor being expanded to the China-India-Kashmir Corridor,� said the statement.
The Chinese Ambassador expressed his concern over the state of affairs at the cemetery of Chinese soldiers at Lekhapani. He said the cemetery should be protected from encroachment and be further beautified.
