Environmentalists new initiative to conserve birds

By ANN Service

JALAH, Oct 22 - Blessed with an ability to identify a bird just by listening to its voice, Rustam Basumatary can name at least 800 varieties of avians which are normally found in the North East.

Hailing from Kamardaicha village in Baksa district along the India-Bhutan border, Basumatary has participated in every single safety-cum-conservation work at the Manas National Park since 2002. With formal training on bird lore, he often acts as a special guide for tourists coming to Manas National Park.

Associated with NGO Manas Mauzigendri Ecotourism Society since 2002, he has concentrated on nomenclature of birds present in the park. Having attended many training sessions on avians, he is today widely acknowledged as a reliable and celebrated bird specialist. Basumatary has received many prizes for his services, including from the Asam Sahitya Sabha, Manas National Park and BTC government.

According to him, 476 bird species are present in Manas. But even at a cursory glance, at least 24 types of birds are heading towards extinction, claimed Basumatary.
