English translation of Khasi classic released

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 5 - Two books published by the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture (VKIC) were formally released at the Guwahati Press Club on Tuesday by veteran journalist Dhirendranath Bezboruah and Kashinath Hazarika, former chairman of NEDFi.

While Bezboruah released The Teachings of Elders, an English translation by Bijoya Sawian, of a Khasi classic written by Radhon Sing Berry Kharwanlang, Hazarika released S Gurumurthys Development through Culture.

Releasing The Teachings of Elders, Bezboruah said he was impressed by the book that reflected some wonderful aspects of human life. The sayings in the book encourage the reader to appreciate qualities like dignity, humility and being responsible. The book enables the reader to realise eternal qualities that allow human beings to conform to the accepted values of society.

Bijoya Sawian said it was her aunt who had inspired her to translate the book into English, insisting that unless it was done a precious part of Khasi culture would be lost forever. While translating it, she realised how rich and dignified the thoughts and ideals of the ancient Khasi community were.

Hazarika said Gurumurthys Development through Culture elaborates on the idea that India must realise the latent strengths that it possesses and develop its own path, allied to its rich culture, in order to find its own strengths which can then be leveraged to bring prosperity for all.
