English edition of Assamese short story collection out

GUWAHATI, July 31 - Well-known publishers Pan Macmillan has come out with a new translation work by Ranjita Biswas titled The Loneliness of Hira Barua. The book�s author Arupa Patangia Kalita (original Mariam Astin athaba Hira Barua) had received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Assamese in 2014.

According to a press release issued here, there are 15 stories in this collection, many of them written in the backdrop of the tumultuous years during the 1970s to 80s and spilling over to the 90s in Assam.

Also included in the collection are stories of optimism and human resilience under adverse conditions.

Ranjita Biswas had earlier received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation in English (2017) for Written in Tears (Harper Collins), a collection of Patangia Kalita�s stories themed on the conflict situation in the North East.
