Engineers gheraoed over poor work

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, June 13 - Local citizens of Gonirgram Bazar under Katigorah constituency confined engineers of the Water Resource Department on Sunday for over five hours allegedly for poor standards of construction work for prevention of river erosion under the Chief Ministers Special Package for Barak Valley.

Assistant Executive Engineer of the department LK Barman along with Additional Chief Engineer Gobind Chandra Kalita went to visit the site for anti-erosion measures, on the right bank of river Barak at Gonirgram under Chief Ministers Special Package amounting Rs 2 crore when people confined them demanding explanations for the below standards of work.

We have repeatedly asked the officials of the department to re-look the work which is being done without maintaining the requisite standard since its start in December last year. But our appeals were unheard, said Moinul Haque Laskar and Bani Amin Barbhuiya.

Later, LK Barman said that the total length of the work is 90 metres and only pitching work of about eight metres was left and so they went to take stock of the work. We know that the devastating rains earlier this year had caused interruptions in the work and there were complications about the horizontal drain and pitching work along with the moist mortar bags. When the water recedes, the contractors shall work on the damaged areas, Barman assured the irate citizens. Police reached the spot in the evening to pacify the people and releases the engineer duo.
