SHILLONG, July 23 � An engineer of the State�s public health engineering department has been arrested by CBI on charges of manipulating his brother�s death certificate and fraudently claiming insurance of Rs 15 lakh from LIC.
Assistant Engineer Pannalal Sahoo and two others were arrested by the CBI from Guwahati on July 16 for fraudulently claiming insurance money from the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) in the name of his dead brother, Pradeep Kumar Sahoo.
Pannalal had connived with his younger brother Ajit Sahoo and his wife, who is an LIC agent, to make a number of policies with the LIC after his elder brother�s death and had withdrawn Rs 15 lakh so far with the help of a fake death certificate, CBI sources here said.
The CBI has also arrested Ajit Sahoo but his wife was not yet booked.
The LIC policies under Pradeep Kumar Sahoo�s name were made about two weeks after he died in January 2007.
The PHE assistant engineer, who is the brain behind this plan, managed to get a fake death certificate stating that his brother died in April 2007.
They submitted the fake death certificate to the LIC and so far had withdrawn around Rs 15 lakh from the company, the sources said adding that as per the policies, they were supposed to get Rs 60 lakh from LIC.
However, after paying Rs 15 lakh to the �nominees� during 2007-2008, the LIC suspected foul play and sought CBI help leading to the exposure of the fraud. � PTI
