Encroachment on reserve forests by Nagas alleged

By CORRESPONDENT

GOLAGHAT, Aug 2 The forest reserves along the Assam-Nagaland border under A, B and C sectors of Dhansiri subdivision have been turned into encroachers haven. The forest cover of 59,944.94 hectares under the forest reserves had been reportedly encroached on by the Nagas. The Nagas had allegedly encroached on 35,000 hectares of land and 79 Naga villages had been established. In the three reserve forest, 191 villages have been established by the non-Naga people. Among them, the majority of the people are suspected foreign nationals, according to sources.

It may be pertinent to mention here that in A and B sectors, the Nagaland Government had established New Land in 1987 and Kohobatu in 1991, both subdivisions. The Naga Government has now been running its own administration. But the Assam Government is still silent in the matter.

The Nagaland Government has been carrying out welfare activities in the two subdivisions. The Nagas attacked the non-Naga people in the border areas in 1979 at Chungajan and in 1989 at Raja Pukhuri during which a lot of properties and houses were destroyed by the Nagas.

After the conflict, an agreement was reached by the two governments and a neutral force was deployed for peace and tranquillity. The A, B and C sectors were regarded as the controversial areas and the BSF personnel were deployed. But in due course, the Nagas encroached on the land belonging to Assam.
