Encroachment of Pobitora land causes concern

By Correspondent

MORIGAON, July 4 - About 350 bighas of land of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary were encroached upon by some doubtful citizens during the last two months causing serious concern among the local people as well as nature-loving organisations.

According to information received, about 300 bighas of land were encroached in Thengbhanga area of Pobitora Sanctuary while in Nakra habi Kusiani area, 30 bighas of land were completely grabbed by illegal settlers. In Kuranibori area of the sanctuary, 20 bighas of land were illegally occupied by the doubtful citizens.

Moreover, on the northern side of the Kholabhuyan forest camp of Pobitora sanctuary, illegal migrants occupied 30 bighas of land and have started boro paddy cultivation. The illegal encroachers also started boro paddy cultivation along the side of the Mayong-Jhargaon PWD road. Although these huge portions of government land were occupied by the doubtful citizens, yet there was no action from the forest or revenue departments. The local people alleged that ecology of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has been affected by these encroachments as the worlds most dense habitat of one-horned rhinos is threatened by poachers and other illegal settlers.

The nature-loving organisations like Pobitora Conservation Society has urged the Government to evict the encroachers for the government land for the safety and security of all wild animals including one-horned rhinos.
