Encroachment impeding JICA-aided water project

By CITY CORRESPONDENT

GUWAHATI, June 16 - The Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya has said that the remaining work of the JICA-assisted water project has been hampered due to encroachment by the people of West Guwahati.

Bhattacharya along with MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita visited Tetelia and Gotanagar among other places yesterday to take stock of the water project work.

The minister said that 95 per cent works of the project has been completed by JICA.

The GMDA takes it seriously to solve the acute water crisis in the city. But, due to some encroachment activity in the areas, the remaining work has been hampered. We have met the local people and urged them to help the JICA in continuing their project, he said.

The people in some areas have extended their guard walls and gates, which are preventing the installation of water pipes. We have given them seven days time to clear the areas for pipe installation, he added.
