TURA, Oct 20 - A gun battle ensued between the police and ULFA (I) militants in South Garo Hills district early this morning. The militants later fled the scene.

Sources said that the elusive Drishti Rajkhowa, a top ULFA (I) leader, was also present during the encounter, but managed to escape along with the rest of his group.

As per reports, the incident took place at about 9.30 am at Bolchugre village under the Rongara PS in South Garo Hills.

The gunfight followed after the police received information about the presence of the militants. When the police team approached the militants, the latter opened firing. The police retaliated and after a brief firefight, the militants escaped by jumping into a ravine, the sources said.

There were no injuries to policemen or civilians during the encounter. We believe that quite a few of the militants sustained injuries due to their manner of escape. A search operation is currently on, said South Garo Hills SP Priyangshu Pandey.

The SP added that the locals as well as police personnel spotted at least five militants in the group.

They are mostly based in Bangladesh, but come to India at times, said Pandey.
