Encephalitis claims 7 lives in Nalbari dist

NALBARI, Aug 4 � Encephalitis, which has assumed alarming proportions in different parts of Nalbari district has claimed seven lives within the last few days, an official source said.

The encephalitis victims of the district have been identified as Sultan Mamood (45) of Chaulkhowa; Gajen Deka (55) of Diruah under Mukalmua Public Health Centre, Mritunjoy Deka (11) of Amayapur, Bhanita Das (21) of Sonpur, Mukuta Ali (55) Janopar under Nalbari circle, Labanya Haloi (40) of Piplibari and Nitumoni Barman (20) of Ponar Kaunia under Chamata Public Health Centre.

The dreaded disease claimed Bhanita and Mukuta on Saturday and Sunday respectively. There are allegations that despite encephalitis taking seven lives in the district, the Health department has taken no serious steps to combat the spread of the disease.

In the meantime, the disease has spread to epidemic proportions in several parts of the State and claimed many lives despite the official machinery adopting precautionary measures to arrest spread of the epidemic and arrest the number of rising deaths.
