GUWAHATI, July 21 - The Disability Employment Initiative (DEI) unit of Shishu Sarothi, which has been advocating for the cause of equal employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, conducted an interview in association with consumer chemical giant SC Johnson & Son and found five persons with disabilities eligible for employment in the last three months.
In the last three months, Shishu Sarothi undertook a host of programmes and initiatives for ensuring quality education and made some socially significant interventions to make life self reliant, apart from focusing on economic empowerment of persons with disabilities.
A functionary of Shishu Sarothi informed that the Disability Employment Initiative also conducted a discussion in Nalbari district on various government schemes like MGNREGA, loan, unemployment allowance, etc.
It needs to be mentioned here that the Disability Employment Initiative (DEI) was launched in March 2010 and one of the main objectives of the DEI has been to promote equal employment opportunity for persons with disabilities among the private sector employers in Assam and other states of the northeastern region.
The DEI had successfully conducted the first ever job fair for persons with disabilities, CareerAccess 2010 in the Northeast, in which 22 private sector organisations and 352 qualified persons with disabilities had participated.
The functionary further said that the constant sensitising programmes have been able to bring a qualitative change in the lives of the persons with disabilities. It is heartening to see the change that is coming in. Until a few years back it was quite difficult for the persons with disabilities to get acceptance. But gradually we are noticing a positive change and more persons with disabilities are getting employed in the private sector, said the functionary. On the other hand, another important work of Shishu Sarothi was an evaluation study on the schemes and programmes of National Trust with the registered organisations of Assam.
