JORHAT, Aug 1 With prayer on their lips and grief in their hearts, several employees and associates of deceased Hamendra Prasad Barooah offered tributes to him at various business establishments and his majestic mansion Thengal Manor at Jalukonibari in Jorhat this morning.
Even as the morning sun raised the mercury at Jorhat, people stood silently with lamps in their hands for paying their personal obituaries to the departed soul of their business leader, who played the role of a pioneer in tea tourism in the State besides being an ideal tea planter for the new generation.
At a distance of 15 kilometers from Jorhat town, Barooah opened up his ancestral home at Jalukonibari for the purpose of promoting tea tourism and named it as Thengal Manor, instead of its old name Thengal Bhawan, which bears the historical significance of publishing the first Assamese daily newspaper Dainik Batori under the leadership of his father Raibahadur Siva Prasad Barooah.
Under the banner of his tourism company Heritage North East Pvt Limited, the tea doyen attracted several tourists from various parts of the country and abroad and many of them lived in this Thengal Manor, which has quality accommodation with scenic surroundings. While some tourists on tea tour prefer the Thengal Manor for its modest accommodation facilities in the lap of nature, others opt for the Bunyan Grove in his Gatoonga tea estate.
However, a day after his demise, all the rooms remained vacant as the officials stopped their business transaction today as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
All of our business transactions have been closed for today. Every employee has been paying tribute to the departed soul, said Uttara Gogoi, a manager in Heritage North East Pvt Limited.
Along with the employees of Thengal Manor, the employees in Banyan Grove and Kaziranga Golf Resort and his tea estates also offered their tributes.
