Eminent scientist, entrepreneur urges youths to become leaders

JORHAT, Sept 2 - Padma Bhushan Dr AV Rama Rao, founder and also chairman and managing director of Avra Laboratories Private Limited, Hyderabad, has appealed to the society, particularly to the younger generation to strive to become leaders by nurturing the qualities like confidence, transparency, integrity, passion and zeal to innovate.

Dr Rao said this while delivering the 23rd Dr JN Baruah Memorial Lecture at CSIR-NEIST here on Friday as the chief guest on the topic �Science and its Relevance to Society.�

The eminent scientist recollected his journey as a scientist, a technologist and an entrepreneur in the field of natural products of chemistry and drug development.

Having a rich background in organic chemistry, Dr Rao lucidly explained about some of the complex compounds land his work in synthesising these compounds which have directly impacted the Indian drug industry and also abroad.

He also spoke about his journey in establishing the Avra Laboratories and the various industrial projects handled by the company. The lecture was jointly organised by the Dr JN Baruah Memorial Trust, Assam Science Society (Jorhat branch) and CSIR-NEIST.

Dr Baruah was a former director of CSIR-NEIST and also an eminent scientist and an educationist from Assam, who contributed significantly in science and its popularisation among the students.

Dr RSC Jayaraj, of RFRI, Jorhat, attended the function as the guest of honour while Dr RC Boruah, former scientist, of CSIR-NEIST and president, Assam Science Society (Jorhat branch) presided over the programme.

Dr D Ramaiah, Director, CSIR-NEIST delivered the welcome address while Dr RL Bezbaruah, life member, Assam Science Society presented a gist of the activities and achievements of Dr JN Baruah. On the occasion, the bust of Baruah was unveiled by Dr Rao.

As a part of the event, this year the Late Dr JN Baruah Student Scholarship was awarded to Partha J Dutta, a student of class XI (Science) of Crescent Academy, Jorhat for having secured 83.8 per cent marks in HSLC this year.
