Eminent geographers� demises condoled

GUWAHATI, Oct 21 - The North-East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) and Department of Geography, Gauhati University jointly organised condolence meetings recently at Gauhati University to mourn the sad demises of two eminent teachers of geography Prof Manotosh Kumar Bandyopadhyay and Prof Suresh Prasad Mandal, according to a press release issued today.

Prof Bandyopadhyay, who served at GU during 1958-1970 and later at Calcutta University until retirement in 1997, passed away on October 10 at his Kolkata residence due to old-age ailments. Prof Mandal, who did his PG from Patna University in 1959 and later worked at Darrang College, Tezpur as founder head of the geography department during 1960-1997, breathed his last on October 14 while undergoing treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi.

At the condolence meetings rich tributes were paid to both the teachers who had left long-lasting imprints among the geography fraternity in this part of the country for their contribution to geography education and great teaching qualities. They were also fondly remembered for being actively associated with NEIGS as its founding life members.

The members present at the meetings prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and expressed sympathy to the bereaved families, the press release added.
