Embezzlement of untied funds alleged

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, May 1 There are allegations of embezzlement of untied funds, released for various developmental schemes in Lakhimpur by the authorities concerned, by some construction committees.

The Department of Planning and Development, Government of Assam, sanctioned Rs 70.98 lakh for seven development schemes in Lakhimpur district for 2014-15. The schemes included the construction of Jyoti Sangam in Jarabari under the Pichala GP, a cultural stage at Shimoluguri, a grant for Sangini Than at the Badati GP, construction of a link road between Ma-Dhowa and Ujani-Ma-Dhowa, construction of a Sankari cultural centre at Sanatangaon in North Lakhimpur, construction of a road from the Mornoi PWD Road to Menton Ghat and the construction of a road from Nilabari to Kowpatoni.

As per requirements, construction committees should be formed with the ADC (Development) as its president and a government engineer and local public as members. However, there has been public resentment over the formation of such construction committees. Some of the committees, which have already drawn some amounts of the funds, have allegedly embezzled the public money with poor construction works.

The public of Lakhimpur district have sought the intervention of the Lakhimpur DC in the matter.
